hey. any of you who enjoy fantasy media. ive been spitballing ideas with not much diversity due to the limits of my own tastes, so i wanna know:

in a fantasy character, what…

  1. is intriguing, making you want to know more about this person? in appearance, mannerisms, etc?
  2. is repulsive, making you drop the plot like a hot coal? pet peeves no matter how petty, physically or socially.
  3. is totally self-servicing and/or attractive? (i Know some of you have blorbos.)

It’s so incredible how there is simultaneously diet culture that says only eating the way of our ancestors is healthy while there are also areas of diet culture that says you can’t eat an apple because an apple = sugar and sugar bad. Meanwhile the people who think it’s only healthy to eat the food of cavemen are drinking their protein shakes they found in the wild.

One week there will be a news headline about a study showing that eating chicken eggs is bad for cholesterol. The next week there’s a news headline about a study that shows eating chicken eggs helps you fight cancer. Both of these news articles made for clicks conveniently don’t mention that the collective sample size of these two studies was fifteen people over a course of five months.

This yoga instructor says you can’t eat between noon and 3 pm. This doctor who had less than ten hours of training on nutrition says you shouldn’t eat after 6 pm. This Instagram dietician says intermittent starving fasting is good for you. This celebrity fake doctor with a TV show says you should only eat on Wednesdays and if the weather is overcast.

Your mom who grew up hating her body because people would judge her for her appearance is on her 20th juice cleanse, but it’s for health, not because a lifetime of discrimination made her feel worthless. And hey, you should do this juice cleanse with her! And then the included three hour workout videos! And this new keto diet meant to help children with epilepsy looks good, let’s try that together! Oh, you don’t want to eat at all anymore? Well, at least not eating is good for you!

You should only eat meat. No, you should only eat vegetables and fruits. Scratch that, fruits have carbs. You should only eat cold-blooded mammals and seaweed. Wait, it’s actually okay to eat fruit again! Does this protein bar have omega-3 fatty acids? Wow, you don’t eat fat-free, dairy-free, carb-free, sugar-free milk? Do you even care about your health? Things without gluten taste worse, so that must mean they’re healthy! I can’t believe you actually ate a whole bag of chips. Yes, it was a single-serving bag meant for one person, but you still ate a whole bag of chips. I could never. Oh, my weekly supply of diet food arrived, and only double the cost of regular food from the grocery store! What a steal!! You actually feel pangs of hunger when you don’t eat and then listen to those hunger cues? What a fat ass. You know if you eat a single piece of cake you’ll get diabetes, an illness that is very complex and is actually extremely based on genetics, right?

You can never win with diet culture.

Diet culture is fucking wild.

I just learned that Trader Joe's labels some of its food as "Reduced Guilt." There's a brand of popcorn called "Lesser Evil." I had to see an ad on Tumblr for a popular yogurt brand with the tagline of "Less sets you free." I read the back of a food product once that described the food as "sinless."

People literally choose a bag of carrots based on the calorie count. I've had to hear multiple people claim that fat people shouldn't be allowed to eat fruit. There was a water brand at the grocery stored that advertised itself as having "zero calories." A woman saw me next to some diet culture smoothie products and made small talk with me about how she didn't understand why the diet culture smoothie made out of fruits and vegetables she was using to replace an entire meal with had a whopping 300 whole calories.

A man talked to me at the store about how he was there to buy a snack, which consisted of two hardboiled eggs and a packet of black pepper. He then told me about his weight loss dreams while being average-sized and thinner than I am.

I saw a post on Tumblr of someone praising a "bread" made out of tree bark that ancient Finnish people ate as a last resort during times of starvation, and they praised this "bread" because it had a fourth of the calories of regular bread—calories that would have saved the lives of countless Finnish people during those famines who instead had to die.

People on here passed around a video of some diet culture soup that promised a loss of 15 pounds in a matter of days, and all of the comments were people laughing at how it did so by making anyone who ate it shit their brains out for a week, yet the people who did were still satisfied with the diarrhea-induced weight loss.

There are so many accounts fat people can give you of thin people who did nothing to obtain their skinny person genetics physically taking food out of the fat person's shopping cart because "You don't need this." And what the thin person decided a random fat stranger didn't need was a fucking melon.

I've talked about this stuff before, but diet culture has legitimately become a cult that destroys lives and kills people by the hour. And yet public outrage isn't about all of this. What people are so worried about is the fact that fat people merely exist. And that is apparently so horrible that we gotta make sure to tax sodas until us fatties go away, which people genuinely think will work.

What really adds insult to injury is how we have known for decades and decades that dieting has never worked from the beginning. But that doesn't make corporations billions of dollars nor one group of people higher on the social hierarchy, so none of that research makes headlines like the next fruit that causes cancer or the new diet that pinkie promises it'll work this time.

I want to scream.

Rachel Corrie, an American citizen, was murdered, repeatedly run over by a bulldozer as she stood in defense of Palestinians.

Her family was threatened and anyone who spoke about her was smeared as an antisemite including Alan Rickman who wrote and directed a play about her.

To this day she is remembered and honoured as a martyr in Palestine.

While, at the time, her death was mocked in Israel by putting her face on pancakes.

There is a street named for her in Ramallah. The Palestinian people will never forget her.

i dont judge any woman who enters the sex industry for any reason, even if its to buy luxury goods or afford an extra vacation (as long as they dont publically downplay the abuse, talk over marginalised women or even defend the system and groom others into it). in the end, the money has to come from somewhere. why do so many men have disposable money to buy sex but so many women cant even afford to live comfortably? do you know what i mean? thats the problem. we shouldnt interrogate women why they need money, but focus on why men are willing and able to spend their income to buy access to womens bodies. many sex buyers are married and have kids, while many women in prostitution are single mothers and/or provide for their families, and have no savings. „treating yourself“ with consumerism as a woman in the sex industry is also a common coping mechanism.

Your "feminist ally" bfs are not based rare good men who treat women right and know how pathetic 99% of other men are, they are like exotic bird collectors who expect you to change overtime and become submissive as you settle down and birth their kids. Most men have that fantasy of changing women after making them believe that they're diFFerEnt and sadly most of them are successful in convincing you that.

Diversity wins! The Supreme Court of India, that refuses to legalize same sex marriage, has granted equal marriage rights to heterosexual transgender marriages. They are being homophobic but in a trans friendly way

pineapplerightsideupcake

It’s almost like gender ideology reinforces patriarchy and homophobia rather than confronting it.

like-a-ruby

if homosexuals are granted more rights if one half of the couple transitions & they can outwardly look like a heterosexual couple it sounds like it would put pressure on gay ppl to transition like what iran has been doing... and this is how the ""community"" reacts

the same ppl who will look at you like you're crazy if you say transsexuality was originally & is still often a way to erase homosexuality will say stuff like "homophobia L but trans ally W" and not see the obvious

“If you believe in REAL equality, then you should support women signing up for the draft, just like men do!”

No. We don’t want ANYONE to be forced to unwillingly signing up for the draft. NO ONE should be at risk of forced labor and death to benefit the military industrial complex and American colonialism.

thatdragonwiththegirltattoo

Hmm I don’t seem to recall female feminists being this vocally against the draft when it only included men. But the minute it could possibly include women it’s all “forced labor” this and “colonialism” that.

You know how people know you don’t support actual gender equality? Because you waited until it might be a problem for you personally to say anything.

fandomsandfeminism

I’ve literally been opposed to the draft since I formed an opinion about the draft as a middle schooler.

And like, women have been opposed to the draft since…forever? Just looking at vietnam, we had  Another Mother for Peace, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), and Women Strike for Peace (WSP)- women’s anti-war groups.

benyw

Like working class women ever wanted their husband/sons/brothers/fathers to be sent off to fight and die in a pointless war!

luncheon-aspic

As if wanting peace hasn’t been considered womanish sentimentality (vs brave virile militarism) since forever 🙄

also the fact that porn is often embedded in some sort of daily scenario instead of at least just showing sexual acts should worry more people.

why do men need to see boss and employee? delivery guy/post man/whatever and woman home alone? or even worse, teacher and student? stepdad and stepdaughter?

it is not just about the arousal of watching sexual acts being performed, they need to see women being available at any time, they want to imagine themselves just „taking“ random women, even the women (and girls) closest to them. also notice how many times there is some type of authority involved?

makes you wonder how many men you encounter in daily situations, even within your family or friend circle, at work, when you order something, really dont see you as a woman, as a person, but as a mere object for their sexual fantasies.

especially considering how often these situations actually happen, and how often there is sexual assault involved.

kthulhu42

I saw a post recently that was like "okay, so you don't care about porn, but do you care about a cop watching "girl tries to get out of a speeding ticket" porn? What about a landlord watching "girl can't make rent" porn? How are women supposed to feel about men in their lives doing this?"

And it's such a messed up thought because 98% of the men in our lives ARE.

I have one very obvious trait - blue hair. So did it freak me out to hear that one of my male friends had been specifically searching for blue haired women in porn? YES.

Did it freak out my friend from my last year of high school when she found her Dad had been viewing high-school-girl porn (which a VERY familiar uniform to ours) on their family computer? YES.

Did it freak out my friend, who happens to be a woman of colour, finding out that her partner EXCLUSIVELY watches pornography of white women? YES.

Did it freak out one of my friends in her 50s when she found out her EVEN OLDER husband (now ex, thank god) was watching "barely legal" pornography? YES.

And we're supposed to believe that men can watch whatever sexual fantasies they want, and it has zero affect on the way they see the women and the world around them??

The ONLY reason we aren't constantly freaked out is because we don't know. I guarantee that if we did know how much these things happen, it would be traumatising.
